Postmodern Cool
Postmodern Cool explores form, tradition and expectation in jazz dance from a postmodern perspective. The production was inspired by postmodernism’s break with the ideals of modernism in terms of truth, reason and freedom, and the need to break free from the structures of the period.
Just as postmodernism redefined the boundaries and genres of its period, Postmodern Cool is an attempt at renegotiating the aesthetic and hierarchical regimes which have historically remained strong in jazz dance.
In this debate between the needs of the present and the traditions of the past, new expressions and aesthetic ideals arise which are both in relation to and in contrast to the current perception of what jazz dance is and can be.
